Why Tattoo Aftercare Matters
A tattoo isn’t just ink on skin—it’s an investment in art, in memory, in self-expression. Proper aftercare is essential to protect that investment. Without it, you risk fading, scarring, or infection. The good news? With the right care, your tattoo will heal perfectly and stay as bold and sharp as the day it was created.
Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Step 1: Keep It Covered
Immediately after your tattoo is finished, your artist will clean the area and apply a bandage to protect it. This is a crucial step in preventing bacteria, dirt, or debris from getting into your fresh tattoo, which is essentially an open wound. The type of bandage used and the time it stays on will depend on your artist’s recommendation and your skin type.
For Second-Skin Bandages:
Leave the bandage on for 3–5 days, depending on how much fluid (plasma) builds up under it. Plasma is the clear or slightly yellowish liquid that your body produces as part of the healing process.
During this time, avoid soaking the bandage in water. While it’s water-resistant enough for quick showers, prolonged exposure (like baths or swimming) may cause water to seep in and compromise the seal.
If the bandage starts peeling or feels uncomfortable before the 3-day mark, remove it gently.
For Plastic Wrap:
This type of covering is typically used for short-term protection (2–4 hours) after your tattoo.
Remove the plastic wrap as soon as you get home, or within the timeframe recommended by your artist.
Wash your tattoo immediately after removing the wrap to prevent bacteria from settling on the fresh ink (more details in Step 2)..
Step 2: Clean It Up
When: After removing the bandage.
Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap.
Rinse your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser.
Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel—don’t rub or scrub.
Step 3: Moisturize (But Don’t Overdo It)
When: After your first wash, and consistently for the next two weeks.
Apply a thin layer of a tattoo-safe, fragrance-free moisturizer. Our Ethos Soothing Balm is a great option.
Reapply 2–3 times a day or whenever the skin feels dry.
Avoid heavy ointments or petroleum-based products—they can trap bacteria and slow healing.
Ongoing Care
Avoid Submersion: No swimming, hot tubs, or baths until the tattoo is fully healed (usually 4–6 weeks).
Skip the Sun: Keep your tattoo covered or use SPF 30+ once it’s healed to prevent fading.
No Picking or Scratching: If it’s peeling or itching, let it be. Picking at it can lead to scarring or patchy ink.
Wear Loose Clothing: Tight fabrics can irritate your tattoo or rub against it, causing unnecessary damage.
Healing Timeline
Your tattoo will go through several stages as it heals. Here’s what to expect:
Days 1–3: Redness, swelling, and fluid discharge (plasma and ink). Normal, don’t panic.
Days 4–7: Light scabbing and peeling may start. It might itch—don’t scratch.
Weeks 2–3: Scabs fall off naturally, and your tattoo might look a little dull or hazy.
Weeks 4–6: The tattoo is healed. Colors and lines will settle and brighten over time.

FAQs About Tattoo Aftercare
1. How often should I moisturize my tattoo?
Twice a day, maybe three times if it feels dry. Keep it light—too much can suffocate the skin and slow healing.
2. Can I exercise while my tattoo heals?
Yes, but keep it light. Avoid excessive sweating or activities that cause friction on the tattooed area for at least two weeks.
3. How do I know if my tattoo is infected?
Watch for extreme redness, swelling, pus, or a bad odor. If you notice any of these, see a healthcare professional immediately.
4. When can I stop using aftercare products?
Once your tattoo is smooth and free of scabs (usually 4–6 weeks). After that, regular moisturizer and sunscreen are enough.
5. Can I swim during the healing process?
No. Keep your tattoo out of pools, hot tubs, oceans, or any water source until it’s fully healed. Quick showers are fine.
